A good time was had by all at this year's Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival, held October 10-11 at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Cape Fear River, two days of non-stop jazz and blues music included concerts by a dozen local and regional bands, including: CrackerBones; Lockdown Blues Band; David Gerald; Kara Grainger; Adrian DukeProject; and Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King; Will McBride Group; Nina Repeta, Freeport; Benny Hill Trio; The FROG Project; and El Jaye Johnson & the Port City All Stars.
On Sunday festival headliner Shemekia Copeland, a two-time Grammy nominee, delivered a powerhouse grand finale to a music-filled weekend. Shemekia entertained fans with her soulful, gospel-infused performance and personal anecdotes between songs from her recently released 8th album, "Outskirts of Love."
As the name of the festival implies, tasty seafood (and other fare) was available from food vendors. A local festival favorite, Michael's Seafood Restaurant of Carolina Beach, served up its award-winning seafood chowder. Attendees also enjoyed the fine wines and children enjoyed magic shows, face painting, educational exhibits, and inflatables in the Kidz Zone.
The 23rd Annual Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival will be held October 8-9, 2016 so be sure to make plans to visit us.
