NC Symphony: Holst's The Planets

  • overview
  • Majestic in its scope and dazzling in its sound, Gustav Holst’s sonic celestial showpiece is a magical, awe-inspiring trip through the galaxy conducted by Maestra Gemma New. This timeless orchestral suite has a movement named for each planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character. Also enjoy Rainphase, the latest orchestral work from New Zealand composer Salina Fisher, drawing on the characteristics of water as rain: its shape and shapelessness, transparency and density, energy and calm, and its capacity for reflection. The evening's program is rounded out with Claude Debussy's classic Nocturnes.
