Named one of TripSavvy.com’s “Best Family Vacations in the Southeast,” Kure Beach has new and exciting events, exhibits and must-visit stops for the whole family in 2020.

Historic Havens and Scientific Sites

Step back in time with a trip to Fort Fisher State Historic Site to commemorate the 155th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher. On January 18-19, 500 reenactors will portray the Union forces that stormed the fort and the Confederate soldiers that attempted to defend their post. Reenactors are only onsite every five years, so you won’t want to miss this live event! Coming in February, the African American Experience exhibit will highlight the life and times of African American soldiers at Fort Fisher during the Civil War. Then, visit in the fall to enjoy an Evening at the Fort, where you can relax with live music, food, drinks and a nighttime cannon firing.

Don’t forget to make a stop at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher that recently received its Sensory Inclusive Certification, ensuring a positive experience for guests with sensory sensitivities. During the spring, immerse yourself in Butterfly Bungalow, a seasonal exhibit making its return to the aquarium. Or, learn more about Asian small-clawed otters in a new exhibit, “Otters on the Edge,” slated to open in late 2020. The 3,000 square foot exhibit located within the aquarium’s freshwater conservatory will feature interactive water elements, living space for separate family groups and behind-the-scenes care areas. Additionally, the aquarium is undergoing long-term renovations and an expansion to provide visitors with a more modern and enhanced experience.
