Resort Retreats

The Holiday Inn Resort Wrightsville Beach will undergo a major refresh this year. Over the next 12 to 18 months, the resort will see renovations to the lobby, restaurants and bars, along with enhancements to the three pools, two whirlpools and other outdoor areas. The 184 guest rooms will also be updated with new furniture and redesigned bathrooms.

Broadway pianist Brian Whitted will treat guests at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort’s East Oceanfront Dining to live music most Saturday evenings. Whitted completed the Broadway run of “Violet” and is also a pianist, arranger and background singer for Bette Midler.

Blockade Runner, along with nearby Shell Island Resort, recently made 365AtlantaTraveler.com’s list of 24 Resorts in North Carolina That Will Have You Packing Your Bags Tonight.

Past Meets Present

Discover island history in the recently renovated Ewing-Bordeaux Cottage at the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. The cottage is hosting exciting new exhibits highlighting boating, deep-sea fishing, surfing and more in January and February. The 1924 historic cottage is one of the last surviving examples of original Wrightsville Beach architecture and will serve as the permanent home of the Waterman Hall of Fame, celebrating the island’s water sports and coastal professions, as well as the Lumina Room, honoring the 1940s Lumina pavilion. On the Water

Blockade Runner Beach Resort, the only resort with surf-to-sound amenities, now offers inshore fishing excursions to Masonboro Island Reserve as part of its Adventure Program. Try your luck fishing for numerous inshore species, most of which are released to maintain protection of the Reserve’s coastal habitats. Packages include everything you’ll need, including fishing rods, bait, tackle and more, along with round-trip shuttle service to the island aboard the new Carolina Runner tour boat.

Enjoy new summer cruises with Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours. The Restaurant Tour lets passengers take in harbor views and dine at a waterfront restaurant of their choice such as Dockside, The Bridge Tender or The Fish House Grill. Or, charter a private Island Luau at Masonboro Island Reserve, including a Carolina-style pulled pork barbecue meal to savor alongside stunning sunsets.

Begin your day on the beach with the whole family at the recently opened East Salisbury Street Oceanfront Park near Johnnie Mercers Pier, featuring ocean access, parking, showers, changing rooms and restroom facilities.
