Wilmington, N.C. - January 21, 2025: On Feb. 1-2, 2025, travel industry partners in Wilmington and its island beaches will welcome the 2025 Maximum Port City Kaua cheer and dance competition.
This two-day competition will take place at the Wilmington Convention Center and consists of both cheer and dance competitors in multiple age divisions. An anticipated 1,500 athletes plus spectators are expected, bringing the number of attendees to nearly 6,000. Participants and their families will stay at a variety of lodging properties and shop, dine and play in local establishments.
Maximum was founded in January of 2017 with only two events in two states that season and has since grown to offer events in 13 states. The goal of Maximum is to provide quality events and an inclusive environment where all athletes feel like they belong.
“Maximum is excited to be back in Wilmington again. This year, we're excited that Port City Classic became one of our Kaua (pronounced ‘cow-a’) series events called Port City Kaua. This move enhances the competition by making it a two-day event for most teams and allows us to add more production, more gifts, and more attendees to Wilmington this year,” states Ryan Batchelor, founder of Maximum. “This event remains one of our favorites that we have the honor of bringing back year after year with 100-plus cheer and dance teams. It is an honor to bring in over 6,000 attendees to the area who will explore the city and utilize local restaurants and hotels throughout the weekend.”
“We are excited to welcome the 2025 Maximum Port City Kaua back to Wilmington. Hosting an event with approximately 6,000 athletes and spectators in early February provides a welcome boost for local businesses during what is historically a slower time of year for tourism,” states Kim Hufham, President/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority. “Competitions such as this also provide a great opportunity to showcase Wilmington and our island beaches. We hope the athletes and their families enjoy their visit and return for future tournaments and vacations.
The New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority (TDA), d/b/a Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau, markets and develops the county and its communities’ leisure and group travel experiences for economic growth and quality of place.
