WILMINGTON, N.C. (April 1, 2026) — Wilmington, North Carolina, has earned a place among the South’s most celebrated destinations, ranking No. 7 on Southern Living’s 2026 “South’s Best Cities” list. Coming in among the top 10, Wilmington joins a distinguished list of Southern cities.

The annual awards, now in their 10th year, are determined by Southern Living readers, with more than 17,000 respondents participating in the 2025 survey conducted by Proof Insights. The rankings recognize standout destinations across the region based on qualities like charm, culture, cuisine and overall travel experience.

“Being recognized as one of the South’s Best Cities is an incredible honor, especially because it comes directly from travelers who know and love this region,” said Kim Hufham, president/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority. “From our vibrant riverfront and historic downtown to our nearby island beaches, Wilmington continues to offer authentic coastal experiences that resonate with visitors year after year.”

Located between the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean, Wilmington blends historic charm with modern coastal appeal. Visitors can stroll the scenic Riverwalk, explore preserved architecture and gardens, and enjoy easy access to three nearby island beaches — Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach — each offering its own distinct atmosphere for relaxation, outdoor recreation, cuisine and more.

This latest recognition builds on Wilmington’s continued momentum as a top Southern destination. The city claimed the top spot in Southern Living’s 2024 “Top 25 Cities on the Rise” and is praised for its evolving food and drink scene, growing accessibility and laid-back coastal lifestyle.

“Wilmington’s presence in the Top 10 reflects the strength of our tourism community and the experiences that make this destination so special,” added Hufham. “We’re proud to welcome visitors to discover the best of the Carolina coast.”
