Fall is only 19 days away. Tis’ the season for cooler weather, festive decor and beautiful fall colors. Fun doesn’t have to be expensive, so that’s why we put together this guide on free things to do in Wilmington, NC so you can enjoy the best season without having to break the bank.

Morning

Take a Stroll Along the Riverwalk

As the sun rises over the Cape Fear River, the cooler air makes for a refreshing start. The nearly two-mile-long picturesque Wilmington Riverwalk offers water views, passing boats and a front-row look at downtown’s historic buildings. Walk alongside the river from Nun Street to the Isabella Holmes Bridge. Cast a line off the Conlon Pier—the only spot where fishing is allowed at the Riverwalk.

Late Morning

Riverfront Farmers Market

If it’s Saturday, the Riverfront Farmers Market is just a few steps from the Riverwalk. It’s open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until November 22.  Browse seasonal produce, flowers and artisan goods while soaking in the atmosphere. Even if you don’t plan to shop, it’s a lovely stop to experience the local community.

Early Afternoon

Explore the New Hanover County Arboretum

The New Hanover County Arboretum is composed of seven acres of plants curated for the region. Explore the tranquil water garden with vibrant koi, water lilies, water sculpture, an authentic tea house and a beautiful collection of Japanese maples. Let the kiddos play in the children’s garden and the colorful Mad Hatter’s cottage.

Aside from the gardens, the NHC Arboretum also serves as a satellite extension of the NC State Extension Master Gardener program. This program, sponsored by NC State University, helps recruit, train and engage people to serve as volunteers that educate people on science-based horticulture.

There is no charge for admission and the gardens are open every day 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Afternoon: Art and History Walks

Peruse The Cameron Art Museum Outdoor Grounds

Wander around the grounds outside of the Cameron Art Museum where you can see sculptures, relax on benches around the pond and experience Boundless—a powerful outdoor sculpture installation honoring African American USCT soldiers.

Reflect at Oakdale Cemetery

Take a peaceful walk through Wilmington’s oldest and most beautiful cemetery, Oakdale Cemetery. Its shaded paths and ornate headstones create a quiet, historic atmosphere that ooze fall vibes under the canopy of centuries-old live oak trees.

Late Afternoon

View Historic Homes Along Third Street

Park on Fourth St. near Dock St. to admire the historic homes up and down Third St. Framed by seasonal colors, the preserved architecture is a reminder of Wilmington’s rich past.

Walk or Bike the Summer Rest Trail

As the day comes to an end, head to the Summer Rest Trail near the Intracoastal Waterway. Locals love this shaded path for walking, biking and unwinding. The soft late-day light filtering through the towering oaks and sugar gum trees make it an ideal stop for autumn leaf peeping.

Sunset: Trails End Park

Close your day with one of Wilmington’s best sunset spots—Trails End Park. Overlooking the Masonboro Sound, the park offers wide-open views of the water and even though the sun sets in the west, it casts a beautiful blanket of colors on the water and sky. Bring a chair or sit along the dock to relax. There are also picnic tables under the oak trees where you could have some evening charcuterie.

Optional: Visit One of The Island Beaches

Explore one of our three island beaches to experience a true locals’ summer where parking is plentiful and crowds are not as heavy. Plus, because of our unique climate, we often continue to have days well above the 60s until November. Free parking begins in Kure Beach on October 1 and November 1 in Wrightsville and Carolina Beach
