Museums and Cultural Experiences

Wilmington is rich in arts and history, and many of its cultural institutions provide thoughtful accommodations for visitors with mobility challenges or sensory sensitivities.

Cameron Art Museum offers accessible tours, programs and sensory materials by request. Visitors can make a reservation on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public, for a calm environment to explore exhibits and enjoy hands-on activities. ASL tours are offered free at least four times a year, so check the museum’s program page to plan accordingly. Guests can park in one of four handicap spots and use wheelchair-accessible ramps and automatic doors that open inward. Children’s Museum of Wilmington offers several programs to accommodate visitors of all abilities. On select Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon, the museum hosts “Sensory Sundays,” complete with low lighting, adjusted audio, signage and designated calming spaces. For regular visits, the museum provides a map with noise levels, a nursing nook and a calming cave on the third floor, noise-canceling headphones and sensory power packs, free of charge at the front desk. Battleship NORTH CAROLINA offers safe main deck tours, breathtaking views from the fully accessible SECU Memorial Walkway and the county’s only ADA-accessible kayak launch. The upper and lower decks remain mostly original and are not fully accessible.

 

Parks, Gardens and Outdoor Spaces

Coastal greenery and accessible parks make Wilmington a natural playground for visitors of all abilities.

Airlie Gardens spans 67 acres of blooms and live oaks with paved pathways and shaded rest areas. A volunteer-operated tram service helps visitors navigate the grounds at no additional fee. Though the tram is not wheelchair accessible, it continuously loops the gardens with designated stops from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

New Hanover County Arboretum features wheelchair-friendly paved trails, benches for rest and several reserved parking spaces. Its Ability Garden invites people of all abilities to try hands-on gardening. Check their programming for events and workshops throughout the year.

Olsen Park houses Miracle Field, a large rubberized baseball field designed for people of all abilities, and the Kiwanis Miracle Playground, the largest wheelchair-accessible playground in North Carolina, both constructed by ACCESS of Wilmington. The park also includes two fully accessible family restrooms and fully accessible spectator stands.

 

Sports, Recreation and Fitness

Adaptive sports programs throughout Wilmington ensure everyone can stay active and engaged.

3 Wheel Therapy provides free therapeutic rides on adaptive tricycles for those unable to ride traditional bicycles. Individual rides start at Mike Chappel Park in Carolina Beach, while group rides can be scheduled for any park in New Hanover County. Plan ahead to schedule a ride.

iFly Wilmington All Stars Program offers indoor body flight experiences for people of all abilities. Highly trained instructors guide all flyers through the experience, including extra assistance with putting on a flight suit and helmet. Wilmington’s performance venues make it easy for everyone to enjoy live music, theater and more.

The Wilson Center offers wheelchair-accessible seating at all price tiers on the Orchestra level and in Opera Boxes C and F, FM assistive listening devices and drop-off services. Live captioning is available for every show in the PNC Broadway and Beach series with a QR code scan. Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park has accessible entry and seating for outdoor concerts and events along the Cape Fear River. Wilmington’s nearby beaches embrace accessibility, making sand, surf and sun available to everyone.

Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier is fully accessible, with all rental equipment provided. Visitors do not need a fishing license, and the pier hosts a children’s disability fishing tournament each October.

Carolina Beach provides year-round beach wheelchairs and accessible mats through the dunes in partnership with Ocean Cure, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Ocean Cure also offers adaptive surfing programs for people of all abilities.
