Cooler air, golden hours and fewer crowds make fall one of the best times to experience Wilmington and its island beaches. From pumpkin patches on the sand to haunted ghost tours through historic downtown, Wilmington and beaches offer countless ways to celebrate the season. Here are the best ways to spend a classic fall at the coast.
Pumpkin Patches and Ale Trails
Head to Trask Family Farms, just 10 minutes from downtown, for a pumpkin patch and the area’s largest corn maze with more than four miles of winding trails, three different mazes and three different difficulties. Wander the “you-pick” flower fields, shop for seasonal treats in the farm store, chase giant bubbles or snap a few photo-worthy moments among the pumpkins. Open late September through early November, this farm is a classic favorite. Tickets are sold online and kids under 3 get in for free!
For something truly unique, visit the Carolina Beach Pier Pumpkin Patch, set right on the sand next to the Carolina Beach Pier. Open daily in October, this free event features pumpkins, food vendors and live music on select Friday and Saturday nights. Make sure to check the pier’s calendar of events. Pro Tip: the Pier also hosts seasonal bonfires on the beach and s’mores experience on select weekends. Check their website for details on how to reserve.
Nearby, Biggers Market in Midtown offers more than 25 pumpkin varieties and different color mums. Grab a beer, listen to live music and shop for local and seasonal produce.
