Wilmington is more than a waterfront town with scenic views; it’s also a hub of creativity and culture. This three-day guide invites you to experience the city through its vibrant arts scene and rich cultural history, from museums and galleries to live performances.

Day 1: Artful Adventures

Afternoon

Lunch at CAM Café

Fuel up for a day of exploring Wilmington’s arts scene with lunch at CAM Café. This art-inspired restaurant is located in the heart of the Cameron Art Museum and serves fresh, locally sourced food for lunch and brunch. Start with the fried green tomato caprese, and don’t miss the CAM Classic Chicken Salad Croissant. Insider tip: Make a reservation by phone to reserve your spot. And if you’re looking for an evening activity, consider returning for one of the museum’s lively Jazz @ CAM nights, which bring world-class performances to an intimate setting.

Afternoon Activity: Cameron Art Museum

After your meal, take time to explore the exhibits at the Cameron Art Museum, which features six to eight rotating exhibits throughout the year. Step outside to visit the US Colored Troops (USCT) Park, located on the museum's historic Civil War site. This memorial is the nation's first park dedicated to honoring the USCT who fought on the grounds. Don't miss the life-sized "Boundless" sculpture that depicts soldiers marching through the site.

Evening

Dinner at Olivero

Complete the day with dinner at Olivero, helmed by Chef Sunny Gerhart, a former James Beard Award semifinalist for "Best Chef Southeast." Olivero blends Mediterranean and New Orleans flavors set against leather booths and marble-topped bistro tables. While the menu changes frequently, we recommend starting with the warm dates with nduja, olive oil and sea salt. Reservations are recommended.

Evening Activity: Live at Ted’s or Fourth Friday Gallery Nights

Just a few blocks from Olivero, head to the Castle Street Arts District to catch a performance at Live at Ted's, home of the Tiny House Concert Series. This cozy venue offers an intimate listening room experience with performances by local artists.

If your visit falls on the fourth Friday of the month, be sure to check out Fourth Friday Gallery Nights, where select galleries and studios open their doors to the public for an after-hours celebration. This free, self-guided tour of Wilmington's galleries is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the local art scene.

Day 2: Culture and Creativity

Morning

Quick Breakfast at The Jelly Cabinet

Start your day with breakfast The Jelly Cabinet, a small locally-owned bakery in the heart of the Brooklyn Arts District. The menu features everything from seasonal specials to their famous cinnamon rolls.

Morning Activity: WilmingtonNColor Heritage Tour

Take a guided cultural journey with WilmingtoNColor Tours. The 75-minute bus tour takes you to significant landmarks throughout Wilmington, highlighting African American achievements, heritage and locals who have made national contributions. Reservations are required at least a week in advance.

Afternoon

Lunch at Food Truck Hub: Chow Town

For a taste of Wilmington’s ever-changing flavors, grab lunch at Chow Town, the new food truck park in the Brooklyn Arts District. With six rotating trucks on the lineup each day, it’s the perfect spot to sample a variety of cuisines in one visit. Be sure to check the schedule ahead of time to see which trucks will be serving. Don’t miss the award-winning authentic Peruvian dishes at Gusto Peruano – especially the savory beef skewers that keep locals coming back for more.

Afternoon Activity: Explore Brooklyn Arts District

Spend the afternoon exploring the Brooklyn Arts District, known for its repurposed industrial buildings and creative spaces. Visit the Brooklyn Arts Center for rotating events like art shows, flea markets and concerts.

Behind The Kitchen Sink, you'll find Acme Art Studios, a working art studio and gallery space showcasing sculpture, painting, photography, fashion and film by local artists.

For a relaxed afternoon drink, stop by Avenue-B, which offers a curated selection of wines and stirs up specialty cocktails. Alternatively, Palate Bottle Shop & Garden features a wide selection of global wines and beers, complete with an outdoor beer garden.

Evening

Dinner at manna ave. 123

Make a reservation at manna ave. 123, Wilmington's only restaurant to hold the AAA Four Diamond Award for 10 consecutive years. Its menu changes daily to highlight the freshest seasonal and local ingredients. Pair your dish with a signature cocktail or a selection from their rare wine list.

Evening Activity: Catch a Show

Wilmington's culinary scene is truly an art form in itself, but your cultural exploration shouldn’t stop after dinner. Catch a performance at one of Wilmington's premier venues. The Wilson Center is Eastern North Carolina's largest and most advanced performing arts venue, hosting Broadway shows, concerts, symphonies and more. Jengo's Playhouse, home of the Cucalorus Foundation, is a funky, independent cinema with a full cocktail bar that holds regular screenings and cinematic events. Wilmington's only full-time comedy club, Dead Crow Comedy Room features nationally and internationally touring comedians throughout the year.

Day 3: More History and Heritage

Morning

Breakfast at Jester’s Cafe

Start your final day with breakfast at Jester's Café, a cozy, quirky bistro housed in a former private residence. It serves hearty benedicts, quiches and French-inspired fare in a welcoming environment.

Morning Activity: Bellamy Mansion Museum of History & Design Arts

Dive into Wilmington's architectural and cultural history with a tour of the Bellamy Mansion Museum of History & Design Arts. The home features one of the few preserved urban slave quarters in the country, along with rotating exhibits. From February to November, the mansion's second level transforms into a gallery space showcasing local artists.

Afternoon

Lunch: Savorez

Wrap up your visit with a Latin-inspired lunch at Savorez. This locally loved spot uses regional ingredients to craft dishes like tapas, empanadas, tacos and tostadas. Every plate is a true work of art.

Afternoon Activity: Thalian Hall

Before you go, take a behind-the-scenes tour of Thalian Hall, one of America's oldest continuously operating theaters. The 60-minute tour explores the theater's rich past and present, from its ornate lobby and balconies to backstage areas, with a few surprises along the way. It's a perfect way to end your arts and culture journey through Wilmington.
